Jenny, Ausable State Park, 1987. In the photograph she stands bent at a 90 degree angle, peering at a fox. A magnifying glass is held to one eye. She doesn’t know it yet, but the animal is dead. She thinks it asleep – natural, perhaps, for someone of her age. She circles it slowly, magnifier in hand. Examining it from all angles, watching an ant slowly climb up its tail and disappear into matted brown fur. She doesn’t hear the shutter click once, then twice. They say the photographer didn’t leave a trace.
