CKUT fee increase endorsement

CKUT fee increase – YES

The Daily endorses a “yes” vote on the CKUT Radio fee levy increase referendum for Post-Graduate Students’ Society (PGSS) students. The question seeks to increase the opt-outable student fee by $1.50, bringing it from $3.75 to $5.25 per student per semester for full-time students and from $1.88 to $3.38 for part-time students.

CKUT performs an invaluable function for the McGill student body by serving as an accessible meeting point between McGill and the greater Montreal community, and by providing independent, grassroots, and anti-oppressive content and programming. Graduate students specifically have played a part in the creation of new initiatives at CKUT and continue to do so; some of CKUT’s original programming started back in 1989 by former PGSS members is still on the air.

This fee increase is necessary for CKUT to keep up with inflation, update its equipment, and maintain and expand its on-campus programming, as well as to continue to offer work-study positions and permanent jobs for students after graduation.

The referendum voting period runs from October 21 to October 27.
