On Wednesday, September 16, photographers Eric Coleman and B+ of the production company Mochilla participated in a POP Montreal symposium titled “WATM (We Are the Medium).” The duo spoke openly about their different backgrounds (Coleman was born and raised in Los Angeles, while B+ grew up in Ireland), solo careers, and subsequent partnership with Montreal-based rapper Yassin “Narcy” Alsalman.
Coleman and B+’s work focuses mainly on Los Angeles’ hip hop culture, which the two have been documenting since the early nineties. More recently, the duo has gone global, taking pictures in places like Colombia and Egypt, oftentimes of the local populations but also of hip hop artists travelling abroad such as Nas and Jay Electronica. Whether shooting record covers or documentaries, the photographers’ shared philosophy seeks to present their subjects as honestly as possible. Notables they have photographed include Notorious B.I.G., Eazy-E, and MF DOOM, to name a few.
B+ and Coleman will showcase their photographs as Mochilla at Artgang until October 4th.
