POLICE SHOOTINGS IN MONTREAL
compiled by Hera Chan and Dana Wray
When Jean-Loup Lapointe, an officer with the Service de Police de la Ville de Montreal (SPVM), shot and killed 18 year old Fredy Villanueva on a Saturday night in August 2008, he considered his act a service to society. Between 1987 and 2008, 43 have been killed by the Montreal police. In all but six of the cases, the officers involved were acquitted. Lapointe was also exonerated and still bears a police badge to this day. In Montreal, it seems, the police can kill with impunity. The purpose of this map is to highlight the extent of police shootings in Montreal between 2000 to 2013. It is worth noting that no officer was accused of a crime in all of the cases described.
